Setting New Hires Up for Success from Day One
In the final session of my Culture Webinar Series, I focused on one of the most overlooked yet critical levers of company culture: onboarding. Far beyond a simple orientation, effective onboarding is a structured and intentional process that defines behaviour, strengthens skills, and empowers employees to thrive in their roles.
When done right, onboarding preserves the energy of a new hire and turns it into confident momentum. When neglected, it leads to disengagement, role confusion, and inefficiency.
1️⃣ Why Structured Onboarding Matters
An onboarding process is more than just paperwork and introductions. It should include:
An introduction to the company’s history and vision
Clear behavioural expectations for professionalism, collaboration, and ownership
Training on tools, systems, and communication standards to empower productivity
A roadmap for self-leadership, conflict handling, and time management
This approach helps teams avoid the culture-killing habit of "sink or swim" onboarding and builds a shared understanding of what success looks like.
2️⃣ Behavioural Expectations: The Missing Link
Many teams experience frustration due to unclear behavioural norms. That’s why I designed an onboarding model that includes practical guidance for:
Handling conflict constructively
Managing deadlines and stakeholder expectations
Communicating clearly, especially via email and meetings
Holding oneself and others accountable
The onboarding framework includes ready-to-implement standards that define the “how” behind the “what” of each role.
3️⃣ Developing the Right Soft Skills
It’s not just about what we know—how we interact matters just as much.
Businesses need to invest in soft skill development like:
Emotional intelligence
Communication etiquette
Presentation skills
Adaptability in client-facing environments
These are trainable skills, and they elevate both internal collaboration and external perception.
4️⃣ Business Communication: Raising the Standard
Email etiquette, meeting preparation, and clarity of communication are areas where even senior staff can fall short. I recommend embedding practical communication training into onboarding to:
Reduce miscommunication
Align professional tone across departments
Enhance the client experience
5️⃣ Empowering with the Right Tools
Many employees underutilise platforms like Outlook or Copilot—not because they aren’t capable, but because they haven’t been trained.
Instead of blocking tools like JGBT or Vo.dev, we should coach staff on how to use them responsibly. AI tools are productivity multipliers when used well.
6️⃣ Recruitment and Pre-Onboarding Touchpoints
There’s also room to strengthen recruitment:
Use behavioural assessments alongside interviews
Review social media profiles (LinkedIn, Instagram) when hiring for high-visibility roles
Speak to previous employers to better understand a candidate’s communication and teamwork style
These extra steps help ensure culture alignment from day one.
